TANKA
Here is an example of tanka poetry:
Tagonoura yu uchiidete mireba mashironizo Fujino takaneni yukiwa furikeru.
English translation:
When I look up at the sky in Tagonoura, I can see the top of Mt. Fuji covered
with snow.
This is one of the famous Japanese poems called gTankah which is a 31-
syllable Japanese poem and describes the poet Yamabe-no-Akahitofs
profound impression that he had when he saw the splendor of Mt. Fuji and
the beautiful snow upon it. Akahito was a skillful poet in tanka poetry while
Basho Matsuo was skillfull haiku poetry. Both of them were famous Japanese
poets and skillful in their own forms of Japanese style poetry.
